Jesse Eisenberg on Lex Luthor’s possible future in the DC Universe

Jesse Eisenberg discussed the possible future of Lex Luthor in a new interview. The actor also talked about his possible involvement in Ben Affleck’s version of Batman.

Jesse Eisenberg, who plays Lex Luthor, says he’d love to reprise the role in a new DC movie, as he would any other role in his career, but it’s not up to him. Eisenberg previously debuted as the iconic villain in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. He reprised the role in the movie version of Justice League’s post-credits scene and was most recently seen in HBO Max‘s four-hour Snyder Cut, released earlier this year.

Zack Snyder may have had big plans for Eisenberg when developing Justice League, but they never materialised. He also said that Man of Steel 2 would have featured more Lex Luthor scenes. As it stands, Lex’s future in the DCEU is uncertain, and Eisenberg is as much in the dark as the rest of us, for that matter. In a recent interview with ComicBookMovie.com, Eisenberg had this to say when asked about the possibility of one day returning as Lex Luthor:

“Umm… [Laughs] I’m probably the last person who knows the answer to that question because I don’t know how they make those decisions. You know, I come from a theatre background where you do a play two hundred times, and you feel like you’re getting into it by the last performance. I would love to play any of those characters again. After a film is over, actors usually turn to each other and say, ‘Oh, now I finally know what I’m doing, and I understand my purpose [in the role] was’. In my experience, actors like to play a role again, but that particular role is not up to me. I’m sure I could do a one-man show somewhere, but nobody would want to, you know…”.

Early on in the development of The Batman, the idea was that the film would serve as a sequel to the DCEU. It was originally co-written, directed, and starred Ben Affleck, who would take on his role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. After Ben Affleck dropped out of the project in 2019, director Matt Reeves and new star Robert Pattinson reimagined it with a new vision. The film is set in a separate universe and has no apparent connection to the DCEU.

In the movie version of Justice League, Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor appeared uniquely. A modified version of the scene was featured in Zack Snyder’s Justice League movie, which portrayed the character in the Batfleck movie that was never made. Eisenberg was asked directly about The Batman and whether there were early plans for his involvement. As the actor explained, if there were, he didn’t know about them. “Yes, of course. If there were [plans], I didn’t know about them. Otherwise, I would have great material, but I didn’t know about it!”

In 2019, Eisenberg said he was “1000 percent” interested in reprising the role if given a chance. He added: “Yes, of course. Yes, I loved it so much. I mean, I was the scariest kid in the world. To play such an evil, flamboyant character, it’s exhilarating. I probably won’t do another one. I don’t know if they’ll do another one with me in it. But I loved it. It was great. I’m so glad I got to do it.”

We can only imagine what else we might have seen from Lex Luthor if Zack Snyder continued with his Justice League trilogy plans. Since there are no plans at Warner Bros for Snyder to bring back the SnyderVerse, chances are Eisenberg’s time in the role may be over. Still, DC World is moving forward with sequels like Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom, as well as the planned Wonder Woman 3, so it’s always possible that the character could one day reappear.
