Jason Blum is hoping to continue the Halloween saga at Blumhouse after the currently planned trilogy is completed. They could even take the story in a completely different direction.
Michael Myers could remain at Blumhouse for many years to come. Starting with the Halloween reboot, which hit theatres in 2018, Blumhouse is working with Universal Pictures on a new planned trilogy of films. The second instalment, Halloween Kills, will finally hit theatres this month and be available on the Peacock streaming service.
The third film, Halloween Ends, is expected to conclude the Laurie Strode vs Michael Myers saga. As of now, no agreement has been reached on whether Jason Blum and Blumhouse will continue with additional films set in the Halloween universe after Halloween Ends. However, that could change in the future, as Blum made it clear in a new conversation with ComicBook.com that he is “excited” and wants to create unique Halloween films after the trilogy’s third instalment.
“We’ve had three film marriages with Michael Myers. I would love to extend it. If Malek [Akkad] would like it, I’d love to extend it, but we’re very busy making the third film spectacular because that’s our immediate job, and if we can continue that, I’d be very happy. But there are no plans at the moment to work on it after the third film”.
It now seems more likely that the story of Laurie Strode, played by Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode, will end at the end of Halloween at the latest. Curtis himself has hinted that this film will mark the end of his time on the series. One of the new film producers, Ryan Freimann, also told ComicBook.com that any future episodes would have to look beyond the Laurie Strode saga to explore new territory in the Halloween universe.
“I think there are other ways and other mediums in which we can explore this franchise. I wouldn’t necessarily say … I mean, there’s always interest in rediscovering Season of the Witch. Is that something that we would compete for? I don’t know. Our focus has been on delaying COVID, figuring out how to do Halloween Ends and how to shoot it, taking care of COVID protocols. That’s what we focused on… But I think it would be something where we’re exploring other, outside areas of the Halloween universe. I think after so many films we need to look elsewhere to be a bit more creative, don’t you?”.
Interestingly, Freimann mentions Halloween III: Season of the Witch as a title that some fans would like to see again. That probably shouldn’t be bet on, as Jason Blum has outright said he’s not interested in rebooting the film. It seems more likely that Michael Myers would return in one form or another after the end of Halloween in a sequel, which could mean a reboot of the story from scratch or even new leads. After all, let’s not forget how much disapproval Halloween III provoked on its release by going in a different direction creatively…
