A "Third-Party" State Of Play Is Coming Next Week

Sony Interactive Entertainment will be doing a shorter State of Play live broadcast, but this time it won’t be their (PlayStation Studios) creations…

Sony (as it usually does) has announced on the PlayStation Blog that it will be hosting its next State of Play on 27 October, another rather inconvenient date for Europeans. We’d suggest sleeping in instead, as it starts at 11 PM Central European Time. This time, the 20-minute show will be devoted to third-party PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 games (sleeping in seems like a better idea, given the length).

According to the PlayStation Blog, “just a quick note to tell you that State of Play returns next Wednesday. This time out, we’ll focus on announcements and updates for upcoming third-party releases headed to PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. The show is looking to be 20 minutes or so and will share new looks at previously-announced games, plus a few reveals from our partners worldwide. See you Wednesday!”

We’ll take a few guesses here: Call of Duty: Vanguard, as Activision Blizzard and Sony have been bosom buddies for years; Grand Theft Auto V, as Rockstar has delayed the next-gen update until spring; Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition, as Rockstar’s re-releases are sure to be snapped up by Sony… but maybe Square Enix will show up with Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin, or Final Fantasy XVI, or perhaps Forsaken, we’ll see. There will also be some reveals from Sony partners, so there might be a significant announcement, but maybe not a big surprise in this broadcast.

The State of Play, which has been launched along the lines of the Nintendo Direct, will, of course, be available to watch in several places. It will also be streamed on YouTube and Twitch. First-party games can be omitted from the predictions, so Gran Turismo 7, God of War: Ragnarok, Horizon: Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, or Marvel’s Wolverine will not be part of the broadcast, and we won’t hear about PlayStation VR 2 (or whatever their next-gen VR headset is called…) during the show either.

Maybe Sony will surprise us positively, but we wouldn’t dare bet that big money on it. It will probably be a forgettable broadcast.
