MOVIE NEWS – The official Twitter account for Matrix Resurrections has joined the online trolling over Facebook’s virtual reality-based renaming of the Facebook to Meta.
The new Matrix movie is coming, which is supposed to put the series on a new footing, but in practice, for the time being, it seems to be a repeat of the 1999 film, which in many ways was a landmark. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will be the new Morpheus, who recently claimed in an interview that The Matrix Rises would be a very “present-day” film, i.e. unlike the first part, it will reflect the present rather than the future, as much of what he foresaw has already been realised, such as the fact that we are constantly “connected” thanks to the various smartphones and social networking sites, including Facebook. Facebook, or Meta, is about to take this to the next level, as Mark Zuckerberg announced this week, and the Matrix team couldn’t let this go unsaid.
Below is a Twitter post showing a modified version of the Matrix Resurrections poster. Previously the post read “The choice is yours”, but now it reads: “Now based on real events, the choice is yours”. The red and blue capsules are unchanged, but the posters have added the hashtag #Meta to the image to clarify what they have shared the new poster about.

What does it mean? At an event called Facebook Connect on Thursday, Facebook, Inc. chief Mark Zuckerberg announced that the media conglomerate would be renamed Meta, Inc. This is not just a simple name change, of course, but also reflects several software and hardware developments, all pointing towards Meta. Metaverse is a platform or virtual reality that will allow us to be present in holographic form anywhere in the world and connect with people we know in a digital space as part of a more interactive experience than ever before. But there is also talk of a device called Nazaré. This AR goggle is similar to the gadget seen in Free Guy, which allows you to see and interact with digitally created objects in physical reality.
It’s not hard to guess what the post in question from the Matrix Resurrections’ Twitter feed might be referring to. The Metaverse could be interpreted as a kind of Matrix. However, not even Zuckerberg and his team can create a perfect simulation of reality as the films have shown or are showing. Interestingly, the name is admittedly taken from a dystopia: Neal Stephenson’s novel Snow Crash, where people escape from the unlivable physical reality of the world.
