Nic Cupac, the camera operator for ‘Indiana Jones 5’, has died in Morocco.
James Mangold’s film had moved to Morocco to shoot an action scene involving a rickshaw that was to require more than 100 crew members, including Cupac. Cupac is known for his work on films in the Jurassic Park, Harry Potter, X-Men, and Star Wars franchises, as well as Disney’s ‘Cruella’, ‘Bridget Jones’s Baby’ and ‘The Da Vinci Code. This new death comes in a Hollywood shaken by the tragic death of Halyna Hutchins in the middle of filming Rust, the western starring Alec Baldwin, who accidentally fired the bullet that caused the death. But unlike the tragic death of the cinematographer, Cupac’s death was not the result of security breaches or safety issues on set.
A Disney representative claims that his death had nothing to do with the production. The company has also dedicated a few words to him after his passing: “Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Nic Cupac, an incredibly talented colleague and member of the film community who will be sorely missed”
The making of the film seems to have been plagued by mishaps, this being the latest and most tragic. The COVID-19 pandemic is taking its toll on production, and it has had to push back its planned release date.
Last week, filming of the movie was again complicated when Morocco banned flights to and from the UK due to an increase in Covid cases. Harrison Ford (79) himself was reportedly due to fly into the country just before the ban was announced and it is unclear where he is currently.
In addition, and as if that wasn’t enough, filming had to be interrupted for three months this year after Ford (79) suffered a shoulder injury. The legendary actor was rehearsing a fight scene when he was injured.
The as-yet-untitled fifth installment of the franchise is directed by James Mangold and due to the pandemic, its release has been delayed from July 2022 to June 2023. It is unclear if Cupac’s death will cause further delays.
