343 Industries wants to make sure we don’t get bored of Halo Infinite’s multiplayer.
There are many ways to get cosmetic items in Halo Infinite. There will be paid battle passes, as well as challenges and events. Jerry Hook, the game’s design head, and Chris Blohm, the lead progression designer, talked about this in detail in an interview with IGN. The $10 battle passes will not expire at the end of the season. Although you can only earn XP one at a time, you can choose which one you use at any given time. Each will come with an armour core with a variety of customisation options.
Heroes of Reach will be the first battle pass, featuring the classic Mk. V base and you can tune it to your liking with a variety of add-ons. “The system that’s been created with the [armour] core at the centre, and then all of the attachments that players can choose to add. Do you want Emile’s knives? Do you want Jorge’s grenades? Mix and match how you want to create your own, or if you’re just like, “No, I want to look exactly like Jun”, then you can do that. And for the first time, you can look exactly like Kat with the prosthetic arm,” the interview says.
There will also be armour sets in the battle pass, so you’ll be able to take on the look of characters from other games. Each pass will have multiple legendary items, and we’ll get one per quarter, so they’ll be fairly distributed. All content will be tied to the Halo storyline so that it will remain “canon”. Items can also be obtained through Campaign Challenges and Events. The latter will also have a free reward path similar to the battle pass, but these will be time-limited: events will last for about two weeks.
The Fracture will be a recurring event that will last for a week but offer non-canon cosmetic items (such as the Yoroi samurai armour). Both Hook and Blohm say they’re balancing the game so that you don’t have to waste your life on cool cosmetic items. Instead, they want to make the game healthy and entice players back with rewards instead of making them grind for something they want to get.
Halo Infinite is coming to Xbox Series, Xbox One, and PC on December 8 (but will also be on Xbox Game Pass). The video below features the Streets map from the multiplayer.
