Back to the past: PlayStation 4 is now selling more than PlayStation 5
Bad news, the PlayStation 5 itself has had to lower its sales expectations. Sony aimed to make 16 million units of its new console in the twelve months of the fiscal year ending in March 2022 and has been forced to reduce that number to 15 million. Fewer units, fewer sales. Fewer sales, less revenue.
And while the PlayStation 5 can’t complain about its sales pace, Sony’s chief financial officer already admitted at the end of October that logistical and component problems have caused that pace to fall below PlayStation 4 sales (Nintendo has also been forced to cut back, as we learned a week ago). Another cause of the delay worsens the situation: an irregular distribution of COVID-19 vaccines in those countries where the essential components are manufactured.
In May of this year, Sony expected that PS5 shortages will extend into 2022 due to a combination of component shortages and high levels of demand. “I don’t think demand will calm down this year, and even if we secure many more devices and produce many more PlayStation 5 units in the next [referring to the 2021-22 financial year], our supply may not keep up with demand,” warned Sony finance chief Hiroki Totoki, according to several attendees at the analyst meeting.
So, for the time being, the panorama will continue to be what we have seen over the last twelve months. Today the forecasts indicate that 2022 will gradually improve the situation, but we will have to be patient until everything returns to normal.
