Halo Infinite free-to-play multiplayer surpasses 270,000 concurrent players on Steam
Xbox’s 20th-anniversary event didn’t leave us with any big announcements regarding new projects, but it wasn’t short of surprises. The most notable one concerns Halo Infinite, and it’s something that had been rumoured in the hours leading up to the event. Finally, it was confirmed: its multiplayer is launching early and can be played now.
Online battles designed by 343 Industries have not been long in coming, and as we’ve learned from early data from the platforms, it’s performing well in terms of numbers. Tom Warren of The Verge noted that the multiplayer had surpassed 200,000 concurrent players on Steam, a remarkable figure with only a few hours available.
Halo Infinite multiplayer just hit 200,000 concurrent players on Steam alone. That doesn't include Xbox or Windows Store players, so it's an incredible start on PC in under 5 hours pic.twitter.com/7VulVOdjuG

This top is exclusive to Valve’s platform, and therefore does not include users who are playing it through the Windows Store, so the number is even higher. It helps that it’s free, of course, but so are the most relevant multiplayer titles of the moment, which also tend to bet, like Halo, on the competitive shooter genre.
The first season will be available until May 2022, although there are plans to launch subsequent seasons after three months. Its battle pass is unique, so we’ll see how it evolves in these early days that will allow the studio to expand the content to enrich progress.
While we enjoy its online component, Halo Infinite’s campaign will have to wait until December 8, when it will arrive on PC, Xbox One and Xbox X Series X|S and will be available on Game Pass from day one.
