Elden Ring: The Publisher Has High Expectations!

An Elden Ring game must reach a certain level to be a profitable product for the publisher (or developer).

It is safe to say that Bandai Namco has high hopes for Elden Ring, and we already have the statistics to back this up. The publisher had a Q&A segment with investors during November. Here, Bandai Namco, which recently changed its logo, said, “As a future major title, “ELDEN RING” is scheduled to be released in February 2022. It has been highly evaluated by the game industry and game fans, having won numerous awards at game events in Europe even before its release. It is expected to sell 4 million units (worldwide including Japan) during this term.”

How can anyone be a fan of a game that isn’t available yet…? Aside from that, we need to clarify what Bandai Namco means by “this term”. We have to think of the last quarter of the fiscal year, which runs from January 1 to March 31… but since Elden Ring will be released closer to March, the time frame will be even narrower for Hidetaka Miyazaki’s and George R.R. Martin’s game to achieve the goal. To be precise, it needs to hit four million sales in five weeks, which may be helped because the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, which launched last November, will also get FromSoftware’s new game. For comparison, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has sold 3.8 million copies in just over three months (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC), but Dark Souls III has sold over three million copies in its first month… then again, Souls is a big name that sells itself.

Elden Ring launches on February 25 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The bar is set high…
