A mod has emerged for id Software’s Doom perennial classic that parodies current trends… and not in a bad way.
The 2016 reboot and its sequel, DOOM Eternal, use the phrase rip and tear as a catchphrase, which can be briefly described as Doom Slayer, the protagonist tearing all demons in half (which, of course, has become a crucial element in the gameplay…). We can translate this expression to the NFT Doom mod: right-click and tear against the NFTs, which is slowly gaining a foothold in the games industry, with Ubisoft Quantum already trying it. We will come back to them.
The NFT Doom from Ultra.Boi has popped up on ModDB, in which the demons have been replaced by a procedurally generated monkey parade of ten thousand from the Bored Ape Yacht Club. They represent the current NFT collection. And against the banana-tossing monkeys, our protagonist doesn’t grab a shotgun or a rocket launcher but fights them with a camera to take photos of the precious animals. It is a parody of right-clickers who save their pictures because it’s strange that a JPG can be owned. And yes, for the removal of each monkey, their value will be reduced.
And NFTs are not well received. We wrote about how GSC Game World, for example, had previously planned to use them in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. However, because the community was so outraged, the Ukrainian studio withdrew the whole thing instead. And in the case of Ubisoft, some developers within the company have their doubts, and perhaps rightly so: artist Liz Edwards, formerly of Ubisoft and now of Respawn, took to Twitter to see how Ubisoft Quartz is doing.
She sees a total of 15 sales on the platform so far (total sales are less than $400…), which means that Ghost Recon Breakpoint’s player base is not that large, and a significant part of the already reduced player base is not interested in the blockchain!
