Yoko Taro, the father of NieR: Automata, made a name for himself with the game’s twisty stories and frenetic mechanics.
NieR: Automata, and the NieR series itself, is undoubtedly better known than Yoko Taro: it combines a twisty story with hack & slash and bullet-hell gameplay that has won acclaim from both players and critics and has also sold admirably.
But its creator knows when to stop, and it seems that the time has come for his franchise. In a video posted on NieR’s official account, Yoko Taro announced that the series is over, so it’s unlikely we’ll see any more titles from her. But in her usual comedic tone, she also says that she may revive it under one unsurprising condition.
“But… You never know… I can make more [NieR games] if I get paid well…” jokes Yoko Taro in the video.
It’s a well-known fact that the creative tends to do whatever he wants during the development of a game, as evidenced by the strange anecdote that NieR: Automata was almost not finished because Taro doesn’t like to get up early. So we might be surprised with more ideas around the NieR universe in the future.
