Gamesindustry’s Christopher Dring gave us a preview from a few countries’ sales data, confirming the best-selling games and consoles there.
Here’s what Dring wrote on Twitter: “Another year dominated by the Nintendo Switch across a bunch of European territories, although the PlayStation 5 looks set to be the leader in the UK, plus smaller markets like Sweden, Denmark and Finland. In terms of games, it was a pretty poor year for ‘new’ game releases across various European territories. As usual, FIFA 22 will be No.1, and it’s sold better than FIFA 21 (so far).
There are only two ‘new’ games in the Top Ten for Europe (GSD data): Call of Duty: Vanguard and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury. Pokémon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl would be there if those games were counted as one. Far Cry 6 still has a couple of weeks to make it. Some fun stats: across Europe, more people have bought Farming Simulator 22 than The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Monster Hunter: Rise, Forza Horizon 5 and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. It Takes Two is the most prominent new IP of the year across Europe (so far), well ahead of Outriders.
We all love Metroid Dread, and it’s a lot bigger than previous Metroid titles, but in the European Switch chart, it only manages No. 23 behind New Pokémon Snap (but ahead of Super Mario 3D All-Stars). Resident Evil Village is currently the fifth best-selling PlayStation 5 game, but FIFA 22 is No.1, just a little ahead of Marvel’s Spider-Man (Miles Morales). Xbox data is complicated because Xbox One games automatically upgrade, so you have to combine Xbox One and Xbox Series, which makes FIFA 22 No.1; Forza Horizon 5 is No.4. This is all so far; a couple of weeks are left before we do the entire 2021 breakdown. Still, time for some sales to change things around,” Dring wrote.
FIFA will not be dethroned; we can chalk that up right away.
