One of the Xbox Game Studios seems to be in a rough situation, while the other is on the up…
Jeff Grubb (a writer for VentureBeat) and Shpeshal Nick (a host for the Xbox Era podcast), two insiders, talked about two Xbox Game Studios during the recent episode of Xbox Era. They named Obsidian Entertainment’s two projects. One of them is codenamed Project Missouri, which, according to Grubb, lacks combat, is Disco Elysium-styled, set in 16th century Europe, and features a murder investigation.
It is rumoured to launch in 2022 (we almost wrote this year, but we are still in 2021), and it is allegedly Josh Sawyer’s brainchild. You might not know his name, but his work could ring a bell or two: Neverwinter Nights 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Pillars of Eternity. These are franchises many people know. There is another project, though. Its codenamed is Project Belfry, a Diablo-style, nicely illustrated action RPG from The Banner Saga’s creators. According to Grubb, it’s also a potential 2022 launch.
But Rare’s Everwild is a different story. The video says, „Everwild is a real mess. They try to talk diplomatically about it, “Oh, people hear things about it — creative director leaving, things getting rebooted — and that’s overstated.” It’s not that overstated. They’ve rebooted that thing, and they don’t exactly know what the state of it is in terms of what they expect it to be. They’re still figuring that out, and it’s a mess. […] That’s not just me using colourful descriptions; the people working on that game don’t know what’s going on with that game.”
Previously, the rumours stated that Everwild is likely not available before 2024, and going by what we just heard, even that feels optimistic at the moment. Then again, it’s all unofficial at the moment, but Rare might be focusing on Sea of Thieves a little too much. Meanwhile, Obsidian has no such issue.
