MOVIE NEWS – Filming is about to begin on the upcoming Mad Max spin-off/prequel film Furiosa.
Things are looking up for the upcoming post-apocalypse Mad Max prequel Furiosa, with reports suggesting that filming could start as early as March. The Australian publication The New Daily (the country where Furiosa will be filming) reported that businesses in New South Wales are preparing for a busy period, as…
“…entire caravan parks, Airbnbs and hotels have been visited by location producers and many have been booked.”
The report goes on to state that “businesses from the Murrumbidgee River to outback towns around Broken Hill” are expecting huge revenues following the current global conditions as it is hoped that filming of Furiosa, starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, could take from mid-March to as late as June.
Furiosa looks set to be the most significant scale film production ever made in Australia. Screen NSW has previously described the monumental work as an “important win” for the state and the wider film industry. “With NSW employing 56 per cent of the Australian screen industry, the production is expected to support more than 850 local jobs and bring around $350 million into the NSW economy,” they said in a statement last year.
Furiosa will follow the titular rebel fighter, who was first introduced to audiences in the 2015 action standout Mad Max: Fury Road. The prequel will explore the character’s origins, long before he became the inspirational commander of Immortan Joe’s War Rig and teamed up with Tom Hardy’s Mad Max Rockatansky. George Miller will return to co-write, direct and produce the project with his long-time Oscar-nominated producing partner Doug Mitchell, and the story will span several years.
“I didn’t set out to make a big, epic movie,” Miller said last April.
“It’s a story I wanted to tell. But as it turns out, it’s just got a lot of different scenes. The one thing I can say about it is, Fury Road happened over three days and two nights, but this is a saga. It happens over many years. So there’s a lot of different elements to it.”
The prequel film approach has seen The Queen’s Gambit star Anya Taylor-Joy step into the role in place of Charlize Theron, who is hugely excited about the shoot. She’ll be partnered with Chris Hemsworth, best known as the MCU’s Thor, who couldn’t be more thrilled to be joining a franchise that has meant so much to him throughout his life.
Unfortunately, audiences will have to wait a little longer for Furiosa, as the project was recently pushed back from a June 23, 2023 release date to May 24, 2024.
