MOVIE NEWS – Jeremy Slater is writing the script for Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema, who have yet to set a premiere date for the new Mortal Kombat movie.
While Mortal Kombat may not have done so well at the box office, the latest film adaptation of NetherRealm Studios’ fighting game was a phenomenon on HBO Max, outperforming hits on the platform like Godzilla vs. Kong in its first weekend. That’s why New Line Cinema has stepped on the gas pedal and signed on a screenwriter for the sequel.

No further details on the film or whether Simon McQuoid will return to the director’s chair have been revealed yet. There is also no word on whether Greg Russo, the writer of the first feature film, will remain involved in the project.
Those who have seen Mortal Kombat will know that the film’s ending provided an opportunity to continue the story, so the sequel will likely draw from that thread for the story. After all, Russo conceived this first film as the start of a trilogy. Until then, we can only wait to see what New Line Cinema does with the project and whether there will be a rumoured spin-off.
Returning to Mortal Kombat, the first film follows Cole Young, a mixed martial arts fighter who must unleash his inner strength to save not only his family but also Earth from the forces of the threatening Outworld, in a story featuring several characters from the series.
