Sony Interactive Entertainment is financing the studio’s new, PlayStation-exclusive IP, developed by the founders that moved over from Treyarch, making it immediately a game to keep an eye on.
Last summer, Sony announced that Deviation Games had come to life. It’s a new indie studio led by two ex-Treyarch devs, Jason Blundell and Dave Anthony. They already had over a hundred employees, but if that number wasn’t surprising enough, we have another twist in this story: on LinkedIn, the American team announced a northwards expansion. In other words, they are entering Canada, too.
“Deviation Games is thrilled to announce Deviation Games Canada! We’ve been working on this initiative for several months now (and keeping it super quiet, by the way, so it’s exhilarating to share this great news with all of you finally! We hope you will join us in celebrating this amazing milestone! We are hiring! So, if you’re in Canada and you’re interested in exploring any of the opportunities on our website, please, reach out!” the studio wrote.
The announcement eerily omits something. They did not mention any city. Montreal? Quebec City? Toronto? Vancouver? They said nothing, which could hint at a hybrid solution, meaning some developers could work remotely from home. The two obvious choices would be Montreal and Toronto. The former is a hub where many companies have a studio (and Ubisoft’s internal issues would mean Deviation could quickly recruit employees). At the same time, the latter could be a place for the English-speaking community.
Last year, Anthony said the following about the still under-wraps game: “We’re drawing on what we’ve learned over our collective decades making games, but we’re also out to make something fresh and brimming with innovation as you’ve never experienced before. We’re not afraid to say that our ambitions are super high: we’re setting out to make a huge, content-rich game with a focus on a lot of action and a lot of energy, but let’s leave it at that for now, and hopefully, it won’t be long before we can share more.”
We’re patient, though. They are allegedly working on an AAA, story-driven RPG, judging by their job listings…
