The head of the Japanese company has confirmed that this $3.6 billion acquisition will not be the last such deal for Sony in recent times.
It is probably the strongest January we have ever seen in the industry. Microsoft has made a big splash with its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, but Sony is not far behind, having recently bagged Bungie for $3.6 billion. With the information being very tight-lipped at the moment, the Japanese company wanted to clarify that the parent company of Halo and Destiny will remain a multiplatform studio and will be able to publish their own projects.
Jim Ryan says we can expect more acquisitions from PlayStation
However, it seems that this is not the end of the acquisition cycle. As Gamesindustry journalist Christopher Dring (who first reported on the acquisition) explains, Sony is in this deal for several reasons: “The motivation behind Sony’s acquisition of Bungie is to help boost its own capabilities in making multiplatform, live-action games. In the same way, Sony is unlocking Bungie’s potential to strengthen its technical capabilities and the ability to transfer its games to film/TV,” he explained on Twitter.
The journalist also adds some extra details to what we know so far. Firstly, he revealed that the deal had been under consideration for 5-6 months, so it was not a quick reaction to Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Furthermore, Jim Ryan also told Dring that we could expect “more” similar purchases from PlayStation.
While Bungie is focused on developing Destiny 2: The Witch Queen, it’s clear that the studio has a crazy few weeks ahead. After all, the news was only released a few hours ago, but it’s already provoked a tremendous response and reaction, with Phil Spencer’s congratulations being a standout comment.
