PREVIEW – John Carter finally gets a video game, though he’ll have to conquer Kickstarter first – here are the first images and details! Edgar Rice Burroughs’ character will be the hero of an action-adventure game set on the planet Mars.
John Carter’s stories have inspired many throughout the explorer’s 110+ year history of adventures. His influence has been felt in works such as Flash Gordon, Jerry Siegal’s Superman and even the Star Wars saga. But despite the character’s importance, he’s never been featured in a video game… until now, when John Carter’s Warlord of Mars is attempting to conquer the battlefield.
Developed by Hypnotic Ants, the first-person action-adventure set on the planet Mars is scheduled for release on PC in 2022, although there has been talking of a console release. Before that, however, John Carter, Warlord of Mars, needs to successfully pass the Kickstarter campaign, which launches on March 1. What can we expect from this action-adventure?
Carter’s boss is the author of the James Bond novels.
The action begins in 1945, at a time when John Carter is being asked to find Hitler’s secret projects. “The commands for the mission come directly from Ian Fleming, author of the James Bond books, the first time we’ve seen the character embodied in a video game. During the adventure, John Carter finds an experimental technology that will eventually get him to Barsoom, which is known on Earth as the fourth planet in the solar system, the red planet: Mars. “
“I’d like to think that Edgar Rice Burroughs would be happy if not only John Carter fans could play and enter his wonderful world, Barsoom […] and the visceral experience of being able to play as his own hero in the video game” – said the head of the company that currently manages the rights to the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs (author of Tarzan). “He must have wanted his immortal swordsman and Barsoom’s rich world to come to life in John Carter’s video game Warlord of Mars, showcasing his work to a whole new generation of players.”
John Carter in World War II
Anyone familiar with John Carter’s story may have noticed that the hero lives in the new adventure in 1945 and not during the U.S. Civil War years. The authors of Warlord of Mars made it clear at the time that they decided on the new location because “we love war games at least as much as sci-fi and love conspiracies theories about Nazi UFOs and those secret bases.
“In our game, we want to play ‘spies’ in a tense ‘cat-and-mouse’ scenario, while we can also take part in great action scenes from the world of Barsoom – Burroughs gave the planet Mars that name.” To create these two very different locations, the team behind John Carter’s Warlord of Mars worked with a sci-fi expert on the Martian action adventure and a historian for the World War II parts scenario.
The Warlord of Mars is being developed by a team of veterans behind the Sea of Thieves and Fortnite, the appearance of which is, of course, not yet known; we have to wait for the target amount set by Kickstart to get into the pot.
