Have Polyphony Digital And Sony Made A Breakthrough In Artificial Intelligence? [VIDEO]

Is it possible that some more serious artificial intelligence in Gran Turismo 7 could stand against us?

It wouldn’t be a bad thing, as Gran Turismo has had relatively poor artificial intelligence, especially in its earlier instalments (you could see it in GT2 in particular, although that game itself was rushed to be in stores by Christmas 1999…). And maybe Gran Turismo 7 will use what Sony launched a few years ago. We’ve heard from them that they’re launching a new artificial intelligence division that would focus on “unleashing human imagination and creativity with AI”. It seemed nothing more than PR talk at the time, but perhaps the seeds planted then are now coming to fruition.

Sony artificial intelligence has tweeted, “On February 9, our team is excited to launch our Gaming Flagship and announce a breakthrough project in AI, created through a collab with Polyphony Digital Inc. and Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE).” The teaser video (embedded below) also openly highlights the Gran Turismo involvement, so it’s logical to think that something significant could be coming for Gran Turismo 7.

We don’t know exactly yet, but last year Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida hinted at it: “Sony AI, which we established last year, has begun a collaboration with PlayStation that will make game experiences even richer and more enjoyable. By leveraging reinforcement learning, we are developing Game AI Agents that can be a player’s in-game opponent or collaboration partner.” Perhaps the Drivatars that have already been in the Forza games for a while could be getting a Sony interpretation? In other words, we would see AI competing with our name and adopting our driving style.

Whatever the Sony AI team will unveil, we won’t have to wait long for its premiere, and the release date for Gran Turismo 7 isn’t that far away either, with both the PlayStation 5 and the PlayStation 4 getting the more classically-themed GT7 on March 4…
