The Xbox-exclusive shooter was developed with the help of Remedy Entertainment (responsible for the single-player portion of the game and using the proprietary Northlight Engine instead of Unreal Engine 4).
Smilegate Entertainment (which also helped the Finns with development) gave, to put it mildly, a bit of a bumpy start to the game, which is currently only available on Xbox One and Xbox Series, and admittedly we didn’t hear much about it in the pre-launch marketing. The lack of review codes for the press pre-launch doesn’t inspire confidence either. The first experiences of gamers reveal why Smilegate may have decided to do so…
The game lacks content, has issues with controls, and lacks options that are commonplace in an AAA shooter these days. But that’s nothing. CrossfireX was supposed to be on Xbox Game Pass from launch. The only problem with that is that many subscribers didn’t have access to the game. Here’s a sarcastic round of applause for Smilegate!
According to the game’s official Twitter account, “Attention, Mercenaries. We are aware that some Game Pass members are unable to access Operation Catalyst. We are currently working to resolve the issue as soon as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience, and we thank you for your patience.” They don’t want to immediately abandon the game after they launched it (which has happened plenty of times in the past).
Some bug fixes have already been promised on the game’s website (https://cfx.game.onstove.com/en/news/205): “ADS with CAR-4: sometimes, the aim-down the sights goes in and out while shooting. This is a bug and will be fixed. Aim settings: we hear your request for options to adjust aim acceleration and sensitivity settings. We are adding more detailed options for the analogue stick, including acceleration, sensitivity, dead zone and aim assist. Sliding: the issue that sliding stops when colliding with the side of an object will be fixed. Also, we will improve the experience of speed reduction while sliding. Boogieman imbalance: we will adjust so as not to obtain additional points while being in the Boogieman state. Also, the ability of HP auto-recovery will be removed, and the difficulty of becoming the Boogieman overall will be increased. Several maps will be added for both Classic and Modern modes.” Expect these fixes to begin rolling out in March.
