And they also had a clever remark at Konami, while the company is still developing Bayonetta 3, which we eagerly await.
Atsushi Inaba, who has been appointed as PlatinumGames’ CEO in January, and Hideki Kamiya (who’s currently supervising Bayonetta 3 and Project G.G.) gave an interview to VGC, and NFTs were one of the subjects among many. Here’s what Inaba said: “I understand it’s a hot topic right now, and it’s starting to gain momentum, but the way that it’s gained momentum has been focused on profitability for the company, but with no positive impact on the creators or the users in any sense. So that’s frustrating to see happening.
The people who are trying to promote NFTs and partner with gaming companies, their conversations seem incredibly one-sided. ‘Hey, you’re going to make money!’. But how does it benefit the user or the creator? If I want to spend my time on something, I want it to help make good games,” Inaba said, and we can understand his approach. He wants to make games, not push NFTs into them, especially if it isn’t beneficial to anyone.
Kamiya, who has zero interest in NFTs, added: “I consider myself a user at heart, more than a businessman. It doesn’t have any benefit for users at the moment. In the future, if it’s expanded in a way that has a positive side for users, then maybe I’ll start to be interested in what they do with it. But I do not see that at the moment.” He then got a question about how surprised he was that a few publishers, such as Konami (or Square Enix), quickly jumped on the NFT bandwagon: “Not really. If it smells like money, Konami’s going to be there in a heartbeat!” Ouch!
Those are strong words from both of them. They won’t wait for user critiques (Team17 or GSC Game World). Instead, they don’t even look into NFTs. It might be a good idea: OpenSea, the biggest NFT marketplace, is losing millions of dollars due to security gaps.
