MOVIE NEWS – The Marvel star Chris Hemsworth would play the superbly named villain in the upcoming Mad Max sequel, Furiosa.
Marvel star Chris Hemsworth would play the villain in the upcoming apocalypse sequel, Mad Max: Furiosa. Appearing on the Blank Check podcast with Griffin & David, New York Times journalist Kyle Buchanan, who also wrote the book “Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road,” revealed that the Thor: Love and Thunder actor will play the antagonist in the prequel from director George Miller. Hemsworth’s character will also have a perfect name for the warped world of Mad Max.
“They’ve got Chris Hemsworth as the villain, who I’ve heard is named Dr. Dementus,” he said.
These details are consistent with a previously leaked casting call, which named Chris Hemsworth’s Furiosa character “Dementus,” and described him as a man in his “30s or 40s” who is “breathtakingly handsome.” Possessing “an angel’s face, marked by a deep forehead wound sewn together with shiny chrome staples,” the role of Dr. Dementus seems to give Hemsworth the opportunity to steal scenes. As he did as the villainous Billy Lee in Drew Goddard’s Bad Times at the El Royale.
Mad Max: Furiosa will follow the titular rebel warrior, who was introduced to audiences in the 2015 action film Mad Max: Fury Road, exploring the character’s origin long before she became the inspired operator of Immortan Joe’s war machine and joined Tom Hardy’s Mad Max Rockatansky. George Miller returns to co-write, direct and produce the project alongside his Oscar-nominated producing partner Doug Mitchell.
Other details about Furiosa are as scarce as the Guzzolene is in Mad Max’s desert landscape, but Miller revealed that the prequel will take place over several years. “I didn’t set out to make a big epic movie,” Miller said. “This is a story I wanted to tell. But it turns out there are just a lot of different scenes. The only thing I can say about it is that Fury Road took place over three days and two nights, but this is a saga. It takes place over several years. So there are a lot of different elements.”
Anya Taylor-Joy will play Furiosa in the Mad Max spin-off.
Last Night in Soho and The Queen’s Gambit star Anya Taylor-Joy will reprise the role of Furiosa from the early years from Fury Road star Charlize Theron. “I was in awe of George Miller’s incredible spirit. It’s hard to put into words. I feel so humbled and grateful,” the actress said of her entrance into the role of Furiosa. “I think the first thing I thought was ‘I’m so excited to be working so hard. The level of commitment that has been shown by those who have come before me, I’m striving to match. It makes me very excited. I have so much respect for the creators of this crazy world and this collection of characters. I’m looking forward to working really hard.”
Chris Hemsworth is equally excited to join the franchise, with the actor calling Mad Max “the pinnacle and a huge reason why I got into the business of storytelling. The fact that I will have the honor of not only being directed by its original visionary, George Miller, but also being a part of Furiosa’s origin story is incredibly exciting. Great respect to George, Mel, Charlize, Tom and all the cast and crew who helped build this epic world. I will do my best to continue the tradition of cinematic badassery.”
Production on Mad Max: Furiosa is expected to begin soon, with an anticipated release date of May 24, 2024.
