The developers of Celeste, which won the Best Indie Game of 2018, had to wait a few years to get their The Game Awards trophy…
2018 was a far different time, and it’s doubtful we’ll ever return to the normality of that time. Whatever the case, PrestigeIsKey, a YouTuber also known as Ryan B., is a big fan of The Game Awards. For that reason, he thought it would be a good idea to get a replica trophy to display on his shelf. So he started browsing eBay to see if he could find something useful there.
He found a trophy from The Game Awards and not a replica, but an original, listed for $500. The seller had some interesting items (car parts) that made Ryan suspicious. “[It] came from one of our liquidation sources. Other than that, we don’t have any other information on the origin of this item,” the seller wrote. He took the gamble and bought the package for $375 + shipping. He was surprised when the package arrived: it was indeed the trophy for Celeste from the 2018 show. The game won the Best Indie category there!
So we contacted the Celeste developers through the studio’s operations manager, Heidy Motta. The question was simple: had they given away the trophy, or had it been lost somewhere? It turns out Extremely OK Games didn’t get the prize! Supposedly, after Ninja handed over the trophy on stage during the awards gala, it was taken back by the organisers to be mailed to them. That’s where it all got mixed up, and the developers gave up long ago on ever seeing their prize again.
Jumping ahead to 2022, however, Extremely OK Games got the trophy. Ryan offered to mail it to them, and the studio offered to cover the postage, plus send him some signed copies of Celeste. So the story has a happy ending, or, to use a quirky and unique twist on a misplaced English quote from a video game…
“Congraturation! You sucsess!” (Bōsō Tokkyū SOS / Stop the Express, the Japanese MSX version).
