Matt Reeves Reveals The Terms On Which He Would Bring Superman Into The Batman Universe

MOVIE NEWS – The new Batman is almost ready, and Matt Reeves has talked about whether other DC heroes, such as Superman, could appear in the Batverse.

Batman and Superman’s first live-action meeting came about thanks to a vision that popped into Zack Snyder’s head, but he didn’t end up finishing it. When and how we’ll see the pair reunite is still up in the air. Since the Snyderverse was cancelled, Ben Affleck has moved on from his Batman role, Henry Cavill’s Superman return is possible but doubtful, and it seems Robert Pattinson may be donning the bat hood for the longer term. Is there a chance he could team up with the prodigal son of Krypton? Matt Reeves has no plans to do so for the time being, but it would be very different from Batman v Superman – Dawn of Justice if it does happen.

The first full reviews of Batman are ready – including ours – as soon as the embargo is lifted on Monday, and early whispers are that there’s a lot of good to be said about the film: its dark, down-to-earth and unsettling tone is one of the big talking points about Robert Pattinson’s debut. With this in mind, the question arises…

… whether a being like Superman can even function in such a world, and Reeves noted this when talking about a possible crossover.

Reeves was asked about whether Superman, and indeed the rest of the Justice League, would exist anywhere in the new Batverse, and the director made it clear that it’s hard enough to make a Batman movie and a world where only Batman exists without having to consider other heroes immediately. He said, “I suppose it’s not impossible to believe that somewhere down the line they could be connected to something else, but I’m not interested in that, and I’m not interested in doing sequels at the moment.”

While there’s a big multiverse and crossover trend in the comic book movie world, Matt Reeves clearly wants to focus on Batman and the characters of Gotham, rather than trying just to drag the whole Justice League along with him. When asked about whether he could and would include Superman in a Batman sequel, the director explained at length that he would only do it with a believable version of Superman, but for now, he has plenty to focus on with the world of Gotham as it is. He put it this way:

“You mean if it could? Is that what you’re saying? I mean, if something like that did happen, because I was very careful about … To me, what I try to do is take … I did this in the Apes films too, and even Cloverfield, this idea of taking the one fantastical element and then have everything around it, so it’ll be as grounded as possible, so that it could feel … I want it to feel emotionally real and to make everything feel very believable.”

“In this movie, even further I think than what I did in those films, I tried to find the practical, believable version. If suddenly in the Batman world, you discovered that there was an alien that was Superman, there’d be a lot of shock. I mean, people would have to say, oh my God, and maybe that would be the one fantastical element.”

“But to be honest with you, that is not the intention at this point, to figure out how to make that come. Look, we should be so lucky that this is a world that people embrace and that they say, oh my God, we want to see what would happen when those things collide. I think if that challenge ever presents itself, it would be an exciting one to explore, but I’d have to try and do it through this lens. You know what I mean? And that is absolutely right, that at the moment, to me, this world is the place that I want to focus.”

With two spin-off series and a possible sequel or two in the works for The Batman universe, Matt Reeves would probably be well-advised not to complicate things by bringing in other heroes outside of Batman’s homeland.
