MOVIE NEWS – Sam Raimi is producing Sony Pictures’ latest horror film Umma, starring Sandra Oh and Fivel Stewart.
Sony Pictures has unveiled the official trailer for the upcoming horror film Umma. Starring Sandra Oh (Killing Eve, Grey’s Anatomy) and Fivel Stewart (Atypical, Freeze), Umma follows a mother-daughter duo whose happy life is threatened by a sinister family secret. Written and directed by Iris K. Shim, who will be making her feature film debut, Umma is produced by horror icon Sam Raimi.
The plot synopsis reads, “Umma, which means ‘mother’ in Korean, follows Amanda (Sandra Oh) and her daughter (Fivel Stewart) as they live a quiet life on an American farm, but when the remains of her estranged mother arrive from Korea, Amanda is haunted by the fear that she will become her own mother.”
The trailer portrays Amanda as an overprotective woman living on a farm with her daughter. Their seemingly strange life is turned upside down after the sudden arrival of Amanda’s mother’s remains. “Her wrath will grow as long as she remains in this box,” says the mysterious courier. Clearly, Amanda and her mother were not on good terms, as she keeps her mother’s existence a secret from her daughter and initially refuses even to accept the remains. “Some Koreans believe that the tormented spirits of their ancestors are responsible for life’s difficulties,” Amanda says at one point.
Iris Shim wrote Umma over two years, who drew inspiration from her childhood and Korean traditions. As the trailer shows, the film contains images inspired by Korean folk tales; the nine-tailed fox (kumiho), for example, appears briefly towards the end of the trailer. Umma seems to be a departure from the usual horror films and aims to come up with something deeper and more personal, or as it is now called – elevated horror. For now, the film seems to have every chance of delivering something lasting rather than a cliché parade.
Umma will be released on 18 March 2022.
