TECH NEWS – Workers got a toothache on Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Ti video cards… but they didn’t get away with it.
Wildberries is considered Russia’s most prominent e-commerce retailer. Three of its employees have been handcuffed after it emerged that they tried to steal twenty Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Ti video cards. Indeed, it’s not a top-of-the-range graphics card, but it’s not cheap (especially nowadays…), but the three individuals should have thought about their plans a bit more…
After all, there is less of a foreign presence in Russia these days after the invasion of Ukraine, so there is a significant demand for hardware. So video cards are in high demand (especially after AMD and Nvidia stopped supplying to Russia). That’s where the three warehouse owners come in. While they could get the video cards from the Wildberries depot successfully, a report from Mash detailed where they went wrong.
The warehouse workers put three packs of cards into boxes in the video. These were transferred across the warehouse after their work hours. They dropped the cards through an open window in the stairwell to a third individual waiting outside. Still, perhaps they should not have tried a nearby store, as it is not customary to take video cards to pawn shops, especially if they are recent models. So they prefer to try to sell them online, but it’s not safe either. The owner of the pawnshop immediately became suspicious and contacted the authorities.
The pawnbrokers tried to sell the cards for $1931 worth of roubles each, so they wanted to get about 38,000 dollars. Their idea was too risky, and the authorities returned the confiscated cards to Wildberries, and the three troublemakers were caught and locked up. They were overpriced. Even in Hungary, you can get an RTX 3070 Ti for ~30% less!
Perhaps they would have been better off with more patience and a lower price tag…
