MOVIE NEWS – Robert Downey Jr. says all is well, the director of Sherlock Holmes 3 is optimistic, and there are rumours that Johnny Deep will appear in the franchise.
It’s no exaggeration to say that Sherlock Holmes 3 – Robert Downey Jr.’s return to one of his most iconic roles – is highly anticipated. It’s been 11 years since Downey and Jude Law last appeared in the franchise. Based on the conclusion of 2011’s Sherlock Holmes: The Shadow Play, audiences were right to expect a sequel.
Earlier this year, Downey was asked on Sean Hayes and Dr. Priyanka Wali’s Hypochondriactor podcast if Sherlock Holmes 3 was in the works. In an interview with Collider, the film’s director Dexter Fletcher expressed optimism about the third instalment being completed but admitted that he had no firm timeline or update on the film’s status, adding:
“The pandemic derailed it. I do think it will get made. I think it has to be made.”
“I don’t know what the timeline of that is, unfortunately, but I believe it should be. It’s fantastic. I think it’s about all the right people being at the right place, at the right time. I think it’s that. It’s one of those cruel twists of fate, where the pandemic hit and that scattered people around the world to the wind. But I know that the appetite is huge for it, and I’m there are other people acutely aware of that as well. But I believe it should be because it’s brilliant. I very much hope so.”
Team Downey, the production company, founded by Susan and Robert Downey Jr. is already working with HBO Max on two Sherlock Holmes series. The pair will executive produce the series, each series introducing a new character who will be at the centre of the plot. Whether they will be villains or allies is yet to be seen.
Meanwhile, since 2020, there have been rumours that Downey’s close pal Johnny Depp is set to join the franchise, especially as his career has been on the back burner in recent years.
Downey was one of the first to congratulate Depp on winning his libel trial, and a representative for the Sherlock Holmes actor confirmed that the two actors met after the jury’s verdict. His appearance in Sherlock Holmes 3 is sure to excite fans. Keep your fingers crossed!
