MOVIE NEWS – Prey director Dan Trachtenberg hints at the future of the Predator franchise after the upcoming prequel, saying he has plenty of exciting ideas.
According to director Dan Trachtenberg, the Predator franchise could continue to expand after Prey hits Hulu next month. Prey is the latest addition to the Predator series, which began in 1987 when Arnold Schwarzenegger’s action film hit theaters. Since then, the franchise has struggled to find its footing, with Predator 2, Predators, The Predator and Alien vs. He failed to impress the audience with Predator crossovers. Even though the franchise hasn’t had much success in 35 years, Trachtenberg is trying to reboot the horror franchise with Prey.
After 2018’s The Predator received lackluster reviews, it was thought the franchise was finally dead. This seemed even more likely after Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, as the studio is best known for producing family-friendly films. While Predator 5 has been rumored for a few years, Disney confirmed in November 2021 that the director of 10 Cloverfield Lane will direct the prequel. Set 300 years ago, Prey revolves around the Comanche nation and a warrior named Naru (Amber Midthunder). Prey will still likely have many of the elements that fans love about the Predator franchise, but the prequel will be completely different from the previous films.
As Prey’s release date approaches, Trachtenberg hints at what’s in store for the intergalactic hunter. In an interview with Time Out, the director confirmed that they have ideas for the future of the series, but did not confirm if they would ever come true. Trachtenberg explained that he is most excited about the Predator franchise’s “boldest swings”.
There are so many exciting ideas for what could be next in the franchise. It’s the boldest swings that excite me the most, and I think there’s still room for other things that haven’t been done before.
Trachtenberg’s comments about doing something different clearly explain the creative decisions behind Prey. Of the Predator sequels, 2010’s Predators is considered the most unique as it took its characters off-world to an alien planet. While Prey is still set on Earth, playing it in the 18th century is certainly a unique idea for a soft reboot of the franchise. If Prey wins over audiences, Trachtenberg’s story could be expanded, but if it doesn’t, the Predator series could continue in a very different direction.
Even though 20th Century Studios has released some Prey trailers and images, there is still a lot of mystery surrounding the story. Because of this, it’s hard to say if Prey has the potential for a sequel. Prey 2 is of course dependent on the success of the upcoming prequel, and will likely be a deciding factor in how Disney approaches future Predator films. The release of Prey on Hulu indicates that they may not be incredibly confident in the film, but that’s simply due to the franchise’s performance in front of audiences. Regardless, fans won’t have to wait long to see how Prey stacks up against the rest of the Predator franchise.
