Polium has unveiled a console for Web3 gaming. The company says it will be the world’s first multi-chain video game console, capable of running multiple games on different blockchains.
According to their website, the Polium One, which is scheduled for release in Q3 2024 (i.e. two years from now at the earliest, but September 2024 at the latest), will be powerful enough to run high-performance games while still being able to be used easily by the “traditional gamer” who does not understand Web3. It will be available for pre-order, but only for those who buy one of the NFTs minted on Ethereum, the Polium Pass, which will be produced in just 10,000 copies.
According to Polium, the controller will have a fingerprint reader for security reasons and a wallet button to access the wallet, linked to multiple chains, to trade and exchange cryptocurrency, which can be received. According to Polium, only four people are working on the hardware, but the company claims it will be capable of 8K resolution and HDR and ray tracing. They also mention a 120 FPS frame rate.
To put it mildly, Polium One hasn’t received a strong reception. The logo is also quite similar to Nintendo’s GameCube, to which Polium responded that it is similar. Still, the GameCube has the letter G, and the cube shape represents their name, whereas theirs signal the blockchain, and the letter P represents Polium. There’s also a lot of criticism on the company’s Discord. In the scam alert channel, users have called the whole project an NFT scam, and in the channel for ideas and feedback, “give up” has also popped up.
Polium responded with a statement on Discord: “We have been receiving FUD and criticism regarding our ability to execute. To clarify, four of us are building the functional prototype for the console and controller. We have experience in hardware and software development. We are currently doing the power tree for the console’s board. We should have a functional prototype by November or before. We will show the prototype live on YouTube or have a well-trusted influencer show you all. The prototype will prove that the console can run games on different blockchains and be built with different programming languages. We will not take any pre-orders/funding until we show the prototype and if the community is interested. Once we have a functional prototype, we will build the console for manufacturing.”
Just as NFTs are in a nosedive.
