Unreal Engine 5 could be used to make an excellent franchise game.
The Breaking Bad series has been a hit from the start, making it one of the best crime dramas on television. After the fifth and final season, a movie was made, which was released in 2019 as El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie. But the story doesn’t end there, as we also get a prequel story courtesy of Better Call Saul. The series is set to end in August after its sixth season.
However, the video game presence for the series is somewhat unfortunate. There was a mobile game, but it was nowhere near the level of a console, PC AAA project. To fill this gap, a YouTuber called Teaserplay tried to use Unreal Engine 5 to imagine what it could be like if a more significant game publisher got the license. He also recreated Walter White and Jesse Pinkman using Metahuman (we first saw this technology in the Matrix Unreal Engine 5 tech demo). Still, perhaps the former looks better due to the uncanny valley. Not left out of the fan’s vision are ray tracing, screen-space reflections, and Lumen and Nanite technology, so Albuquerque, the biggest city in New Mexico, doesn’t look bad.
In the trailer, Walter White drives on asphalt and off-road in his RV in addition to dealing with drugs. Several sentences from the series have been cut (e.g. “I am the danger… I am the one who knocks”). One vehicle does explode in the video. And viewers liked the concept, apart from the animation of the faces, which could look somewhat better.
Why didn’t AMC try a game adaptation? Are they afraid that after The Walking Dead’s multiple failures, they’d get themselves burned again…?
