CD Projekt RED: A New The Witcher Trilogy, Cyberpunk Is Still On The Cards

A summary of the future of The Witcher and Cyberpunk franchises.

Adam Kiciński, CEO of CD Projekt, said in the company’s fiscal earnings call that a new saga is starting in The Witcher, but they are not planning just one game. The first such saga consisted of three games; the second will not be a one-part saga. It is in the pre-production phase of development and will use Unreal Engine 5. There could be three parts to the next The Witcher story. If this is how the Poles are planning it from the ground up, it might be a good idea to tie the events together in the Mass Effect style. In The Witcher 3, you could import the save from 2, which changed who was alive and who we had what kind of relationship with…

The new part of The Witcher (not supposed to be The Witcher 4 because, in 2017, Marcin Iwinski from the company said it was planned as a trilogy, so it can’t be number four for that reason) will focus on the Lynx school of the Witchers if the medallion seen in the teaser released by the Polish studio is to be believed. But meanwhile, let’s not forget about The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Complete Edition. Regarding the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and re-release PC version, Kiciński said it would come in the fourth quarter of this year, so it will arrive between October and December, even though it was supposed to be released in 2021 but has been delayed several times. In April, the studio took the development back from Saber Interactive, responsible for the Switch port, after a development hell (and Russia’s war against the Ukrainians played a part in it). The release, which will feature DLCs inspired by the Netflix series, will be free to anyone who owns the game on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC (upgrade; but will also be available for purchase separately).

But let’s also talk about Cyberpunk 2077. Its add-on, Phantom Liberty, has been announced. However, it will be the only add-on for the game! CD Projekt RED confirmed it to Polygon, so it may be a drop in the bucket compared to the two add-ons for The Witcher 3, but who knows how much content will be in this “spy thriller” (they used that term!). The New United States of America’s government now has V on their side, but it will no longer be on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One: look for it on PlayStation 5, Xbox Serial, Google Stadia and PC next year.

Meanwhile, Michał Nowakowski, vice president of business relations at CD Projekt, said, “On the question of further expansions for Cyberpunk, we decided to develop one major expansion for Cyberpunk which will take advantage of all the capabilities of the new-gen consoles. We’re fully committed to developing the Cyberpunk IP further beyond this particular Cyberpunk expansion. We’ve put a lot of effort and time into building this franchise, and we definitely want to continue to build upon what was built now with new stories, experiences, and new content, not just in a video game format, but I’ll leave it here. So, there will be just one major expansion in terms of expansions. However, there’s going be new stuff in the future.” Cyberpunk Edgerunners, which CDPR has produced and animated by Studio Trigger, will premiere on September 18. Cyberpunk 2077 racked up more than 18 million sales between December 2020 and April 2022, and the February next-gen release was satisfying, according to the Polish company, especially for the console version…
