PlayStation 5: The New Model’s Internals Are Surprisingly Different [VIDEO]

The new PlayStation 5 model, the CFI-1200, comes with new firmware, but there’s also a new system update for PlayStation 4.

Austin Evans got his hands on a new model of the PlayStation 5, the CFI-1200, which has been available in Australia since late August, and he says the inside is “surprisingly different”. He compared it with the previous model, codenamed CFI-1100 (he suggested that the CFI-1100’s smaller heatsink made the console worse, but Digital Foundry refuted this).

The CFI-1200 has a different motherboard from the other two versions and has an even smaller heatsink. There’s also a heat dissipation pipe that runs along the other side of the console. The SSD enclosure “shield” has also been improved. The PlayStation 5 has lost 0.2 kilos, and its power consumption is lower: when running Astro’s Playroom, the CFI-1200 consumed 201 watts, compared to 229 for the CFI-1100 (and 218 for the opening model). “They have moved around basically every component, including the CMOS battery, which is now completely hidden by the heatsink. Before, you could easily replace it if you needed to, but now you need to disassemble your PS5, which is certainly a downside completely,” says Evans. We’ll continue after the video.

A post has popped up on the PlayStation Blog about the new firmware update, 22.02-06.00.00.42, which adds 1440p support via HDMI (as output), game lists, and community features. A party member can ask a teammate to share their screen, friends’ profiles can be easily viewed, and you can receive notifications to join their session. While playing, you can search YouTube by voice (Hey PlayStation, find [keyword] on YouTube). New features are coming to iOS and Android later this month (launch PS Remote Play from the app, for example, plus you can request a screen share from here).

And on Reddit, we read that PlayStation 4 has received firmware 10.00. While using the Internet Browser, you can now select between two types of zoom functions. “Zoom” lets you increase the size of the elements on the page while adjusting their layout, so everything fits without having to scroll left and right. “Magnify” increases the size of everything on the page without layout adjustments. The maximum zoom/magnification rate is now 500%. It’s now easier to use the keyboard on your PC or Mac when using PS Remote Play. We’ve removed the text entry box so you can use your keyboard to type directly onto your PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 4. In addition to typing, you can now use the keyboard to control games supporting it.
