Tron: Identity: Will The Characters From The Movies Return? [VIDEO]

At the D23 event, Tron: Identity was announced, and lead developer Mike Bithell revealed a few things about the Tron universe…

Tron: Identity director Mike Bithell has revealed that characters from the film franchise will not appear in the game. Tron offers several microcosms within the franchise universe, allowing the game developer to deviate from the main storyline. This means that Bithell Games can easily maintain the boundaries of the larger ecosystem and culture of the influential franchise. Much of the game is still unknown, but we already know that it combines a comic book style with puzzles and elements of traditional adventure games.

Tron: Identity, developed by Bithell Games, was announced at the Disney and Marvel Games Showcase at D23 Expo, with a release date of 2023.

The characters and story threads may offer different perspectives, but everything takes place in the world where Kevin Flynn was initially trapped in one of the servers and where Sam Flynn tried to free him. The authenticity had to be there all along when adding content to such a well-established franchise.

Although the Flynns are not visually present in the game, we get to know them better through Tron’s backstory. The story occurs 20 years after Flynn’s escape, on a different server. On this grid, the forgotten inhabitants are living through an unprecedented crime. The solution to this mystery has been entrusted to an investigative program called Query. The world within the Grid has evolved over the 20 years, and crime has flourished.

As a visual novel game, the game is characterised by the unique approach to the franchise that Disney expects from its video game collaborations.

Heidy Vargas, a producer at Pixar Games, also confirmed that the brand new story, the different Grid and the introduction of new programs would allow for creation of diverse characters. It was important that Bithell Games, which is developing John Wick Hex, included strong female characters in the games. These new characters integrate seamlessly into the familiar environment and are given a rich storyline that reflects the Tron universe. According to Vargas, this is just the beginning of the collaboration between Disney and Bithell Games, with more games to come.
