Rise of the Ronin, which will be a PS5 exclusive from the makers of Nioh, is being signed by the developers of Nioh, but a PC version is also expected.
Veteran team Team Ninja announced their new action-RPG Rise of the Ronin at the recent State of Play, inspired by late 19th century Japan, the period when the feudal system was coming to an end in the land of the Rising Sun. “Darkness is greatest before the dawn,” reads the official description of Rise of the Ronin, which will be a PS5 console exclusive.
We’ll have to wait until 2024 to take on the role of the Ronin in this action-RPG.
What can we expect from the makers of Ninja Gaiden and Nioh? You’ll be a Ronin, a warrior with no lords and no bonds, and as your destiny intertwines with the characters in the story, you’ll be part of an immersive experience of combat and action.
Rise of the Ronin is described as a “combat-focused” open-world action-RPG set in Japan’s “era of great change” at the end of the Edo period – a historical moment that could be of great interest and potential for such a game, as Japanese society faced “oppressive rulers, deadly diseases and the influx of Western society” – all during a civil war.
“This is undoubtedly the most ambitious and challenging project for Team Ninja Studio to date”, Fumihiko Yasuda, Director, Team Ninja
Team Ninja has praised the darker, more realistic nature of the story and setting and confirmed that as a Ronin, we would be free to act as we please in aid of the factions/characters that populate this portrait of Bakumatsu-era Japan. “This is undoubtedly the most ambitious and challenging project for Team Ninja Studio to date,” reads the PlayStation blog.
No further details have been released, but it has been confirmed that the game will be released in 2024. It will be PS5-exclusive on consoles, so it is expected to be released on PC. Interestingly, another historical-themed game set in Japan was also announced at the same State of Play. This new Like is Dragon Ishin, the next instalment in the Yakuza saga.
