This list could be a trump card in Sony’s hand if it’s serious about not wanting to see the Bobby Kotick-led publisher in the hands of Microsoft…
While Saudi Arabia and Brazil have already accepted Microsoft’s plans to spend nearly $70 billion to acquire Activision Blizzard, the European Commission already has concerns (and we wrote about it the other day). Sony is not against this kind of expansion by its rival for nothing because it only has to point to its top list, where ActiBlizz has a pretty bold result.
The top list below is courtesy of CADE, Brazil’s Administrative Council for Economic Defense, based on data from Newzoo, an analytics website. It shows the top 20 for the PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, considering the monthly active user (MAU). We are only focusing on the PS5 list, as Sony does not want Activision Blizzard to leave PlayStation in Microsoft’s possession.
Fortnite (publisher in brackets: Epic Games) tops the charts, followed by Grand Theft Auto V (Take-Two), and the first Activision Blizzard game occupies the third place, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Warzone (technically, it could be treated as two games…), but in tenth place, we have the Kotick clan again with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 (it could be two games, but it’s in a pack… unfortunately, the sequel was canned, and Vicarious Visions folded into Blizzard!), and then three more Call of Duty games: Vanguard in 13th place, Black Ops Cold War in 14th, and Black Ops III in 17th.
This list doesn’t include free-to-play Overwatch 2 and the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Call of Duty: Warzone 2! So Activision Blizzard could take up to 7 places in the top 20 (because they would most likely put the two new CoDs in the same place)…
