TECH – NEWS – The public so poorly received the overpriced video card that the company saw no other way out.
On September 20, Nvidia officially unveiled the first members of the RTX 40 series, the 4090 and the 16 and 12 GB 4080. The latter was quite confusing, as the performance on paper seemed to be poor, while the price of $899 (excluding tax, of course) seemed to be exorbitant, which meant that Nvidia was not exactly trying to position the model where it belonged.
After the 12 GB RTX 4080 was met with awe and not understanding from prospective customers, who of course expressed their disappointment, the manufacturer decided not to launch the card, and tried to explain the reasons in a blog post.
According to Nivida, the RTX 4080 12GB, which was intended exclusively for partners (read: no Founders Edition), is a fantastic graphics card but has the wrong name. And two 4080s could confuse users. All this means that only the 16GB RTX 4080 will launch on 16 November, but the manufacturer hasn’t told us when and under what name the weaker model will get a second chance.
