Sony has Removed an Important PlayStation Plus Feature!

It seems Sony has made a big change to its PlayStation Plus subscription service, removing an informative feature.

It seems that Sony has removed expiry dates from PlayStation Plus, giving fans almost no indication of how much time they have left to play a particular title. As Sony’s subscription service for console owners, PlayStation Plus offers a range of benefits for those who pay a monthly fee. This year, new tiers have been added to PlayStation Plus subscriptions, giving players access to Extra and Premium tiers, which include a huge range of streamable and playable titles.

As with Xbox Game Pass, new titles will be added to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium from time to time, with big releases such as Deathloop, Stray and GTA Vice City: Definitive Edition also becoming available. However, as some popular titles are added to the PS Plus Extra and Premium library from time to time, other titles are also being removed from the service. To ensure subscribers can play a game before it is removed, previously, players could check the expiry date to see when these titles would be leaving.

Now it appears that Sony has removed the ability to see exactly when a game will leave PS Plus Extra or Premium. As pointed out by PS Play’s Twitter account, and spotted by Push Square, games no longer inform players when they will be taken off the service, leaving out an important piece of information for many. The ‘Last chance to play’ tab is still viewable, but if a player clicks on a game within that tab, they won’t see exactly when it will leave the service, which will likely cause some confusion later on.

While games on the PlayStation Plus Essential tier will remain for a month before being removed, there is no set pattern for when titles on the Extra and Premium tiers will be removed. Games on the Extra and Premium tiers will not remain in players’ libraries once removed, as with the Essential tier, and will only be playable for as long as they are available through the service. The PlayStation Blog in Japan still lists expiry dates for some games, and informs players that they can still play GTA Vice City: Definitive Edition until 20 February 2023, but unless this change is reversed, future additions to the service will remain for an unknown period of time.

This change may not matter for those who play the games as soon as they join the Extra and Premium libraries, but for gamers who usually wait a while before they take the time to play these titles, it may be worrying that they won’t know when certain editions will be released. Recently, PlayStation Plus removed the original Red Dead Redemption from its subscription service, essentially making that game unplayable on PS4 and PS5.
