The Japanese publisher has experience in it… but maybe it’s time to stop.
At the end of 2014, at the PlayStation Experience (do you even remember these events?), Square Enix announced Final Fantasy VII for PlayStation 4… but it wasn’t the first chapter of the remake. It was a PS4 port of the original 1997 PS1 to PC port! And the reception was disappointing, seeing the audience’s reaction. Of course, at E3 2015, they got their act together and indeed announced the first act of Final Fantasy VII Remake for the PlayStation 4.
Only it wasn’t the only case. A few weeks ago, the Japanese publisher trademarked the Symbiogenesis name in the Asian island nation. The name immediately brings Parasite Eve (based on the book by Hideaki Sena) to mind, an IP that was abandoned after The 3rd Birthday was released on PSP, but fans thought that Square Enix might bring Parasite Eve back in the form of a remake. But no… it’s going to be something entirely different.
Symbiogenesis is a collectable art project from NFT, in which we unravel the story according to the half-minute video posted on Twitter. It’s due out in the spring. It seems it has nothing to do with Parasite Eve. However, Aya Brea deserves some attention (true, the gameplay of the second game was faster-paced than the first, and we’re not talking about the PSP spin-off The 3rd Birthday). As expected, the reception to the announcement was intensely hostile. There’s a question about whether it will be related to Parasite Eve, but Square Enix says it will be a new franchise.
Square Enix’s CEO highlighted in an open letter published earlier this year that NFTs and blockchain were in the company’s interests, and that’s why the Japanese publisher joined one in September, even though the reception to the technology has not been positive. After all, the company shouldn’t be surprised if everyone looks askance in its direction because who knows what else they’re hiding their NFTs in…
