The Deus Ex and System Shock producer’s next game already has a name.
Aside from the two titles above, Warren Spector has worked on Crusader: No Remorse, for example, and we heard in March that he was developing a new immersive simulator. It’s called Argos: Riders on the Storm (someone sounds like a fan of The Doors…), and it has a multiplayer approach. Spector’s studio, Otherside Entertainment, has posted some details on their website. It’s not much, but it’s something to go by…
“From the creative mind of Warren Spector comes a new game set in an alien yet strangely familiar world. As with Warren’s previous work in the Immersive Simulation genre, the world will offer players the chance to ‘pick a playstyle’ – to decide how to interact with a deeply simulated outdoor environment. But be aware that your choices will have large and small consequences and directly affect your experience. You will be able to team up with friends to weave a unique story unlike any other players,” the studio’s website says. That’s all we know.
Spector told IGN that he’s sticking to the genre of the immersive simulator (like Deus Ex, System Shock, and BioShock!). For years, he has been wondering what the next step in its evolution might be and concluded that it might be time to experiment with a multiplayer approach.
Spector later added that the multiplayer component of Argos: Riders on the Storm will be relatively small, so hundreds of players won’t be around at once. In System Shock 2, hackers and OSA agents tried to professionally get through everything while armed marines shot at everything and everyone. The result won’t be bad if he can come up with a crazy concept like that. And Spector has a lot to look forward to with Argos: Riders of the Storm after the disappointing Underworld Ascent, which was intended as a spiritual sequel to the Ultima Underworld series, released in 2018. He says that if people want something unique and innovative, the team will outdo it because he sees what’s in the works as crazy.
Let’s hope for the best.
