MOVIE NEWS – William Shatner has fallen out with his former Star Trek co-stars again and says he has no patience for them.
William Shatner has never been afraid to speak his mind, and he did so when it came to how he feels about the way some of his old Star Trek co-stars have spoken about him since working together. Shatner has feuded with several of the show’s stars, and in a recent interview with The Times, he called George Takei and other cast members “these people” who criticized his behavior on set when filming stopped.
Shatner’s comments to Takeira stemmed from his former co-star commenting on his space travel with Jeff Bezos. Takei was asked about Shatner’s flight at the time and what he thought about it. Takei didn’t mince words, saying, “He’s boldly going where others have gone. He’s a guinea pig, 90 years old, and it’s important to find out what’s happening. 90 years old will show a lot more wear and tear on the human body, so he’ll be a good specimen to study. Although he’s not the fittest of 90-year-olds, so he’ll be a specimen who won’t be fit!”
Now Shatner has issued a scathing response, saying that Takei never stopped “blackening” his name and went on to lash out at everyone else on the show who kept bringing up how he allegedly behaves on the set of Star Trek when he’s not in front of the cameras . He told The Times:
“Sixty years after some of the incidents, they’re still spinning it. Don’t you think it’s a little weird? It’s like a disease. I’m starting to understand that they’re doing it for publicity. George [Takei] never stopped blackmailing my name “ Shatner said. “These people are bitter. I have run out of patience with them. Why should we give credit to people consumed by envy and hatred?”
As William Shatner alluded to, he has feuded with George Takei several times over the years, most recently when Shatner was ready to go into space. In addition to his comments about this, Takei also took aim at former Captain Kirk being jealous of the popularity of his Star Trek co-star Leonard Nimoy. He put it like this:
“It became more and more intense. How can I say? It started with the TV series. There was one character whose aura and the mystery was like a magnet. It was Spock, the strange, pointy-eared alien. It captivated the audience and the women thought, ‘I’m the one who can turn him on.’ There was so much of his fan mail and so much of Leonard’s, and it created a tension, an insecurity [in Shatner]”.
It didn’t take long for Shatner to respond to this dig, saying:
“George needs a new hobby. He’s making things up now. We’ve never seen any fan letters. That’s why secretaries sign so many photos. We’ve hardly seen George. He’s been home once a week at most – how would he know anything? The only jealous man George.”
After going on for so long, it looks like the rift between Shatner and his Star Trek-era co-stars isn’t going to fade away. As evidenced by his latest interview, Shatner wants to ensure he has the final say on the subject, even if that means his interviewees boldly go to many places they’ve gone before.
