Ten million sales in the first three days were just the beginning: Nintendo and Game Freak’s game is a success, despite its questionable graphics and performance (plus a few bugs here and there).
Japan’s Famitsu reported that Pokémon Scarlet/Violet, which has been available since November 18, sold more than two and a half million copies in Japan in three days (the week ended on November 20). For your information, these are only the retail sales in the Asian island nation. In three days. It looks a lot stronger, though, when you show last week’s top 10 (where it’s clear that Game Freak’s game would have taken the top spot effortlessly; the overall sales there so far are in brackets):
- Pokémon Scarlet/Violet (Switch) – 2,537,292 (new game)
- Splatoon 3 (Switch) – 36,958 (3,368,155)
- God of War: Ragnarök (PlayStation 5) – 9,901 (39,278)
- Monochrome Mobius (PlayStation 4) – 9,066 (new game)
- Tactics Ogre Reborn (Switch) – 7,687 (44,470)
- Minecraft (Switch) – 7,449 (2,855,406)
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Switch) – 7,330 (4,906,589)
- Cardfight!! Vanguard Dear Days (Switch) – 6,649 (new game)
- SympathyKiss (Switch) – 6,072 (new game)
- Sonic Frontiers (Switch) – 5,837 (31,904)
Excluding just two PlayStation games on the list (and one of those was the new God of War), Pokémon Scarlet/Violet accounted for 96.3% of retail sales. According to Nintendo’s announcement, including digital (eShop), Japan generated 4.05 million sales. That’s an astonishing figure. It also pushed Nintendo Switch sales (again, total sales are shown in brackets):
- Nintendo Switch OLED – 102,605 (3,083,839)
- Nintendo Switch Lite – 40,432 (4,970,529)
- Nintendo Switch – 27,656 (18,866,523)
- PlayStation 5 Standard Edition – 26,946 (1,848,649)
- PlayStation 4 – 5,803 (7,826,141)
- PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – 4,912 (291,848)
- Xbox Series X – 1,373 (168,640)
- Xbox Series S – 154 (212,419)
- New Nintendo 2DS XL – 34 (1,189,185)
170,693 Nintendo Switch sales were almost double the 97,542 sold a week earlier. The limited-edition Pokémon-themed Nintendo Switch OLED may have played a role in it, as more than 102,000 of these were sold in Japan…
