MOVIE NEWS – The actor talks about his role in the much-anticipated sequel to the Indiana Jones saga and his time with Harrison Ford off the set.
Antonio Banderas has a role in the upcoming Indiana Jones 5 movie, albeit a small one. In an interview with Collider, he described his involvement in the film as more of a “cameo” than a starring role, although he is very grateful to be part of the franchise:
“My character is very small; it’s almost a cameo… He’s just a friend of Indiana’s character, and he’s looking for her because he needs something from his friend. But it takes very little time out of the film, but I’m very happy to be part of a saga that’s part of the history of the motion picture, obviously”.”
While no official images have yet surfaced of Banderas appearing in the upcoming film, it’s easy to imagine him and Indy in a laid-back bar, reminiscing about times gone by and catching up. Despite the limited screen time, Banderas was able to spend some time with Harrison Ford outside of filming and had some kind words for the leading man:
“For me, just being on set was important. And I have to tell you: I had a great time with Harrison. He is a gentleman on and off the set. I shared some dinners and some time with him, and what a gentleman!”
It’s a dream come true for Banderas, who was impressed when he saw an Indiana Jones film in cinemas at a much younger age. He also said he was starstruck the first time he saw Ford on set and in costume with the iconic hat and whip. For Banderas, this is his first entry into the saga, although it may not be his last, as a Disney Plus TV series based on the film series is rumoured to be in the works. The cast of the TV series has not yet been revealed.
Banderas also appeared in another archaeological adventure film earlier this year, Uncharted. Uncharted is based on the video game series of the same name, which in turn was inspired by the earlier Indiana Jones films. But Banderas has a much bigger role in Uncharted: he is the film’s antagonist.
If you want to see Antonio Banderas in a leading role, you should check out Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, where he plays the adventurous cat in the long-awaited sequel to the 2011 spin-off of the Shrek franchise. The trailer reveals that Puss in Boots has lost eight of his nine lives, and after hiding safely in a cat sanctuary for a while, he sets off on an adventure to find the recently landed Star of Wishes, which will allow him to reclaim his nine lives. The film will be released in cinemas on 21 December 2022.
Indiana Jones 5 will star Harrison Ford in the title role, although it will be his final role in the saga. It will be released in cinemas on 30 June 2023 by Walt Disney Studios. James Mangold will direct and co-write alongside Jeremy Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth. Co-starring Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Boyd Holbrook, Toby Jones, John Rhys-Davies and Antonio Banderas.
