MOVIE NEWS – The next animated Batman movie will hit cinemas next spring, with a supernatural horror theme set in 1920s Gotham.
Batman is getting another animated film adaptation based on the 2001 comic book, The Doom That Came to Gotham. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the voice cast is already in place, with David Giuntoli starring as the iconic caped crusader.
This is one of the strangest Batman comics ever, with a 1920s setting and Lovecraftian themes. Set outside the DC Universe, it is more of a standalone comic with no direct connection to the events of the other volumes. In the comic, the titular character accidentally unleashes a supernatural creature in a far more mystical story than the usual Batman stories.
There will also be some Batman-universe allies and villains, including Green Arrow, who is voiced by Christopher Gorham, and Captain James Gordon, who John DiMaggio voices.
Patrick Fabian, best known for his role as Howard Hamlin in Better Call Saul, will play District Attorney Harvey Dent, aka Two-Face.
The Doom That Came to Gotham will be the first Batman film since the death of Kevin Conroy
David Giuntoli will have a big gap to fill. It will be the first Batman film to hit cinemas since Kevin Conroy’s death last month. Conroy is widely regarded as the best Batman voice actor of all time. Some say he was the best actor to play the vigilante, regardless of the medium. Conroy brilliantly played Bruce Wayne’s grim, brooding nature while showing a softer, more sensitive side to the sophisticated, charismatic mask Wayne donned in public. He last played a role in 2019.
Batman is a complex and varied role that dozens of voice actors have taken on. This is not Giuntoli’s first appearance as Batman, as he also starred in the 2021 film Batman: Soul of the Dragon, which received positive reviews.
However, this will be his first role since Conroy’s death, leaving Batman fans sadly but eagerly awaiting a new generation of actors to fully take up the mantle of one of the world’s greatest detectives.
David Giuntoli is perhaps best known for his starring role in NBC’s Grimm.
The Doom That Came to Gotham is expected to hit theatres in the spring of 2023 from Warner Bros. Animation. Sam Liu and Christopher Berkeley will direct, with Jase Ricci penning the script. The cast includes David Giuntoli, Tati Gabrielle, Christopher Gorham, John DiMaggio, Patrick Fabian, Brian George, Jason Marsden, Karan Brar, David Dastmalchian and Navid Negahban.
