Among them are some incomprehensible moves because although they have an online component, the single-player segment could have kept the two Unreal, for example.
Epic Games has announced that it will start removing more of its games from Steam and GOG, for example, beginning December 14, and the Tim Sweeney-led company will also eliminate the ability to buy in-game DLC. The reasoning is that the online services and servers for their older games will be shut down, and only Epic Online Services will be supported.
Epic says most games will remain playable offline, but some won’t be playable at all. The company has apologized for the changes. On January 24, the company will discontinue online services for the following games: 1000 Tiny Claws, Dance Central 1-3, Green Day: Rock Band, Monsters (Probably) Stole My Princess, Rock Band 1-3, The Beatles: Rock Band, Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars, Unreal Gold, Unreal II: The Awakening, Unreal Tournament 2003, Unreal Tournament 2004, Unreal Tournament 3, Unreal Tournament: Game of the Year Edition. On December 30, the tactical RPG Battle Breakers will shut its doors. The mobile title DropMix is gone, and the Mac/Linux versions of Hatoful Boyfriend and Hatoful Boyfriend: Holiday Star are no longer available for sale.
Dance Central VR and Rock Band 4 multiplayer features will remain. The online components of Unreal Tournament 3 will return later, but here’s why: Unreal Tournament 3 X. Or UT3X. It already has a Steam page, and from that, we learned that there would be crossplay between Steam, GOG, and Epic Games Store players. There will be no microtransactions. I will be free-to-play and a fully featured game (you’ll need an Epic account in return). So it’s no coincidence that Epic Games has temporarily removed the game.
But why did Unreal Gold and Unreal II: The Awakening have to be removed? Does the company want to erase its past so severely that it’s even stepping on its single-player core titles? Let us ask an awkward question at the end: wouldn’t it have been a better idea to support the free-to-play (Unreal Engine 4) Unreal Tournament instead of pushing Fortnite?
