Events are unfolding around Sony. There could be something new coming in both hardware and software.
In an interview with Famitsu, Hideaki Nishino, Sony’s senior vice president of platform experiences, hinted that something new could be coming in 2023 for the PlayStation 5 hardware: “By the end of fiscal 2022, cumulative sales will exceed 37 million units, and we believe that it will be a significant time for the platform as well. I won’t be able to talk about specifics now, but I hope you will look forward to next year (2023).” He may have meant 2023, and the end of that fiscal year is in September, but whatever. The point is there. He was referring to something new.
We’ve previously written on a rumor level that a slim PlayStation 5 model could be in the works, which could be released as early as September. In the interests of cost-effectiveness, Sony is said to be making it without a Blu-ray drive. Still, in exchange, it could sell the optical drive separately so that those who would trade in disc games would have the option to play them as usual (otherwise, it would just be a reworked PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, which doesn’t have a disc drive). However, it could also be a more powerful console. After all, the PlayStation 5 will be three years old by autumn 2023, and the PlayStation 4 Pro hit the shelves similarly after the original PlayStation 4 model.
Meanwhile, over at the PlayStation Blog, Bluepoint Games seem to be hinting at their next new project in the image below. The shield represents the Demon’s Souls remake (and it’s still PlayStation 5 exclusive, like how the original was only available on PS3…), the axe refers to the studio’s help in developing God of War: Ragnarök for Santa Monica Studio and the sword refers to the Shadow of the Colossus remake (created with the now-closed Japan Studio). That leaves the fourth unopened box in the picture…
Last September, Bluepoint told IGN that they were working on original content and that this would be the next step in their evolution. Bloodborne 2? We’ll see…
