Will Bungie’s New IP Be A Third-Person Shooter?

The studio isn’t just looking to work on Destiny and has been working on a new IP for years.

Bungie isn’t just known for Destiny, as the studio has previously been involved with Marathon, Myth, and Halo. In June 2018, they received a $100 million investment from Chinese tech giant NetEase to take on more franchises. Since then, Bungie has become independent from Activision Blizzard, and the Destiny IP has remained in their hands.

Recall what Bungie CEO Pete Persons said when Chinese money was on the table: “This new partnership will enable us to accelerate our global vision while building new teams dedicated to delivering brand-new experiences. NetEase creates and operates some of the most popular games on the planet. We’re excited for them to bring their experience as we enter this new chapter in Bungie’s history.”

They had a trademark on Matter a few months later, but Bungie has been silent on its new IP for years. However, in early 2021, the studio announced growth plans: moving to a new studio by the fall of 2022, and with at least one new IP due for release by 2025, they’d justify the move. The new IP is hinted at in a job advertisement for a lead gameplay engineer, which tells us that it will be a third-person action game (a significant change from Halo and Destiny). An earlier version of the job offer also mentioned that the game will run on the Tiger Engine. This is the studio’s proprietary technology used in Destiny 2.

They may have switched engines in the meantime. If they’re still planning a release for 2025, we might hear something official about Bungie’s new IP next year. Still, the studio could resurrect its Marathon IP with an extraction shooter (but then, it’ll be a secondary project to Matter if the rumors are true).

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
