According to a recent job announcement, Valkyrie Entertainment, the Sony-affiliated studio that helped develop the last God of War, is starting work on a brand new strategy game.
Valkyrie Entertainment, which previously supported Sony Santa Monica Studios in developing God of War: Ragnarök, has hinted that it is working on an all-new strategy game, according to a new job posting. This is not unusual for Valkyrie Entertainment. They have previously launched Guns Up! Mobile, a mobile-only title. The beloved Advance Wars franchise clearly influenced the game.
God of War: Ragnarök’s primary developer, Santa Monica Studios, is reportedly working on several projects, all of which will likely serve as biggies for Sony’s PlayStation brand in the future.
However, it’s hard to discern what direction Valkyrie Entertainment might be heading in. Although the genre has been announced, it is unknown what form this new project may take. What is certain is that there is a niche for free-to-play strategy titles such as Valkyrie Entertainment has experience in. Nevertheless, it is worth noting that Guns Up! Mobile actually debuted as a console exclusive on the PlayStation 4.
In their recently posted Backend Engineer job posting, Valkyrie Entertainment is described as a Seattle-based provider of “content and co-development for some of the most well-respected developers in the industry.” The listing mentions the studio’s work on God of War: Ragnarök and League of Legends. Sony acquired Valkyrie Entertainment in late 2021. This suggests that its next project could be on a much larger scale.
It seems that Sony is at least interested in the free-to-play space. Early last year, Sony acquired ex-Halo development studio Bungie, the team behind the hugely popular free-to-play looter shooter title Destiny. Also, in 2022, there were rumours that Sony was experimenting with running ads in free-to-play titles. While nothing has been confirmed, this new Valkyrie Entertainment project might play into that plan.
Furthermore, in 2021, Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida announced that the publisher would launch a mobile gaming initiative. However, very little of this has materialised in the year and a half since then.
Still, Valkyrie Games’ expertise in mobile games and its close ties to Sony suggests that the studio could indeed develop a mobile title for the publisher. This would come as a shock to many Sony fans. Mobile games are incredibly lucrative, so it’s not unthinkable.
