Nothing New Under The Sun: 2022’s North American Bestseller Is What We Predicted

Although there was another game during the year that could be called a resounding success, there is, unfortunately, nothing new to report.

The NPD Group has only released partial data for December, but we have the December top 10 and the overall 2022 top 10. Since that’s the focus, it’s probably not a big deal that we don’t know yet, whether the PlayStation 5 pulled in December (since Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan announced the console shortage issue had been eliminated when sales reached 30 million, we’ll take his word), because the Nintendo Switch is slowly aging (it will be six years old in March).

North American December top 10:

1 – Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II

2 – Pokémon Scarlet/Violet

3 – God of War: Ragnarök

4 – Madden NFL 23

5 – FIFA 23

6 – Sonic Frontiers

7 – Elden Ring

8 – Need for Speed Unbound

9 – Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

10 – Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII – Reunion

The usual games topped the list, but it’s thought-provoking that the buggy Pokémon Scarlet/Violet came in second, ahead of the new God of War and the annual American football and gambling game. The new Need For Speed came in 8th, and the updated Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII came in 10th. So the latest Call of Duty brought the form, but was its performance enough to take the top spot in the annual overall rankings despite its autumn release?

North American 2022 top 10:

1 – Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II

2 – Elden Ring

3 – Madden NFL 23

4 – God of War: Ragnarök

5 – LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

6 – Pokémon Scarlet/Violet

7 – FIFA 23

8 – Pokémon Legends: Arceus

9 – Horizon Forbidden West

10 – MLB The Show 22

Pokémon Legends: Arceus should be the direction of the main series (and it wasn’t buggy and even looked pretty), but yes, Call of Duty has finished at the top of the list again, ahead of FromSoftware’s game. Madden NFL 23 took the third spot on the podium.
