Guerrilla Games is not officially talking about the project, but a lot has leaked out, so this might be the studio’s worst-kept secret.
It’s been rumored for years that Guerrilla Games, formerly developing the Killzone IP, has a new golden egg-laying hen, Horizon. It would get a multiplayer installment, most likely a spinoff. Still, the Dutch studio hasn’t even casually confirmed its existence, but several job postings and leaks have managed to counter Guerrilla’s silence. On Reddit and the ResetEra forum, a few pictures and a video of the as-yet-unannounced project have leaked, which is trying to follow the style of Epic Games’ Fortnite.
It is not the end of the story, as rumors are already hinting at when we can expect this game, which is likely to be part of Sony’s live service expansion, so it’s almost immediately safe to say that this title will definitely be a free-to-play game on PlayStation 5 (and possibly PlayStation 4), and later on PC. However, the leak is not from a new, more modern build, as it is said to be from a “very early” 2020 version that has been leaked to the internet. Still, it means that the Horizon multiplayer project has been in development for two or three years, so it could be available shortly.
Of course, it is not yet official. Still, it doesn’t matter because Sony has indeed previously stated that they will be going for the live service model (which is funny because Square Enix has recently started sending their live service games to the slaughterhouse one by one, and it’s ridiculous what the Japanese publisher is doing). It would fit into this concept ultimately if Horizon gets such a spinoff. It’s a question of when it will be announced, but let’s take a wild guess: it will be released sometime in the fall and will be free to play.
Of course, it could also be a paid game because Sony’s business acumen is almost fabulously out of touch with reality (who would pay more for a VR headset than the console needed?).
As of writing this post, the video has been removed from Reddit. Oh, what a shame. You can download it here.
