Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has a reputation as one of the more measured voices in the gaming industry. In a recent investor call, he was asked about the potential impact of AI technology on the future of gaming.
While Zelnick is skeptical of some of the hype surrounding AI, he does believe that the technology has the potential to enhance the industry significantly.
“I’m the first person to be skeptical of other people’s hype,” Zelnick said. “There is no such thing as artificial intelligence. People will try to make a better Grand Theft Auto with AI, but that won’t happen.” Despite his skepticism, Zelnick believes that AI research has the potential to revolutionize the gaming industry by providing new tools to enhance creativity and efficiency.
“We are ushering in a very exciting era of new tools,” Zelnick said, “and they’re going to allow our teams and our competitors’ teams to do very interesting things more efficiently, so we’re going to want to do more. We’re going to want to be even more creative.” AI applications in the gaming industry have already included the use of AI-generated images for game art and even game assets, and AI opponents for training.
Zelnick doesn’t believe that AI tools will replace human developers, but he thinks they will raise the bar for the entire industry, leading to even more creative and innovative games.
